Hide-A-Hose® SDI (subsurface drip irrigation).
Most of you already have a drip zone in your garden or shrub areas. Until now, we were not able to use this drip line for your lawn areas. The tubing was not designed to be buried. It was limited to above ground use only. A company called Netafim has introduced a new product called Techline CV. This tubing is designed to be buried and now we can install it under your existing lawn.
Techline CV was first used in large football, baseball fields and large commercial installations. The installation equipment was large and to big for residential yards. Hide-A-Hose® has developed installation equipment just for small to medium residential yards here on the Vineyard. This new equipment will allow us to install one, two or three drip lines at a time, reducing installation costs with virtually no damage to your exiting lawn. Now we can convert your lawn spray zones to super efficient drip zones at an affordable price. The estimated price is approximately $0.55 per square foot.
(Two drip lines being installed at one time. As you can see, there is no damage to the existing turf!)
The Hide-A-Hose SDI conversion is very simple and we can use your existing timers, valves and feed lines. All we do is install the drip line to each zone and remove the old sprinkler heads. We will even buy back your old sprinkler heads. Convert only one zone this spring and “test drive” the system this coming summer. You will be amazed with the results.
Here are just some of advantages of Hide-A-Hose® SDI over conventional spray:
- Saves water, 30% to 70% less than conventional spray systems.
- Increased watering times, you can run the system at any time of the day or night. You can be mowing the lawn and watering at the same time.
- No more broken spray heads.
- Less maintenance cost.
- No more wet walks, windows, cars or dogs.
- Exempt from outdoor water bans.
- 97 % efficient, low evaporation rate uses every drop.
- Not effected by water pressure. Great for low pressure applications.

Did you know that outdoor watering uses 54% of
you total household use? By converting to SDI
you can greatly reduce that amount.
Here is an example of the money and water
saved in just one season with Hide-A-Hose® SDI
Oak Bluffs water charges as of 12/1/07
$338.00 ($1.20 per thousand gal. plus a $72.00 service charge) for 60,000 gal.
Then $1.45 per thousand gal. for any use over 60,000 gal.

A conventional 3 -zone irrigation system uses approximately 900 gal every time it runs. Here on the vineyard, we need to water approximately 90 days a year. Take 900 gal X 90 days and you get 81,000 gal used per season. That’s a lot of water.
When you convert to SDI you total water use will be approximately 30% to 70% less. Let’s take 50% for this example. 40,500 gal. You will save over $320.00 per year! Over a 10 year period that’s $3,200.00 in savings. For those of you with 4 or 5 zone systems the savings will be even greater.
I received a letter from the Oak Bluffs Water Commissioners on the topic of Hide-A-Hose® SDI and received positive endorsements. They also express their support on the water conservation aspect of the technology.
We are offering Hide-A-Hose® SDI conversion systems to our existing customers at a reduced price. The estimated price is approximately $0.55 per square foot. Save money and do your part to save our island water resources. I have Hide-A-Hose® SDI at my own home and you are more than welcome to come by and take a look.
